DRBR: Houston Texans

From an overall scoring standpoint, Joe Mixon has always had decent scores in the Dynamic Running Back Rating (DRBR). Unfortunately, though, the dynamic section of the rating has never really been too kind to him. Early in his career, in the dynamic section, he would put up some numbers anywhere between 60 and 65. It gave us a little glimmer of hope that maybe if he just saw a little bit more volume or Cincinnati made some changes, he would take that to another level and become one of the top running backs in all of football.

But unfortunately, his fantasy status has always been pushed by inconsistent games and a heavy amount of volume. He may find himself in the best position that he has been in since he entered the NFL. Houston doesn't have one of the greatest offensive lines in the NFL, but last season they started off really poor. After some injuries, they got everybody healthy and gelled by the end of the year. There is an opportunity that their offensive line could be middle of the pack this season, which would be better than what Cincinnati's been putting together for the last few years.

C.J. Stroud, right now, based on what he did last year, is very comparable to Joe Burrow. From a weapon standpoint, they've got guys all over the place—Stefon Diggs, Tank Dell, Nico Collins, Dalton Schultz. They're never going to be able to stack the box against Joe Mixon. This is going to be a big year for him in the DRBR section because this would be the year where we could finally see some of that efficiency that we saw early in his career really blow up and give him the upside that we have been hoping for.

Now, you can't teach an old dog new tricks, so I'm not willing to jump on this bandwagon of saying, "Yep, he's going to see efficiency that he's never seen in his career so far." I'm just going to hope for a little bit of a bump up from what we saw last year. Still, a really good amount of volume, some more opportunities to score, and I'm going to look at Joe Mixon more as a low-end RB1 or high-end RB2 this season.

So, yeah, maybe the high-end RB1 "what ifs" with Joe Mixon will always be that—what ifs. But we can certainly lock him in to some pretty safe production in 2024.
