Was Breece Hall really as big of a disappointment last season as we make it out to be? I mean, if you drafted him and used a high draft pick on him, clearly you don’t love the results you got. But when you dive into the numbers—was it his fault? Was it the offense’s fault? Will he be back to normal? That’s where we need to start asking questions.

His DRBR numbers weren’t awful last season. They could’ve been better, sure—but when it comes down to it, he played in an inept offense with an aging quarterback who didn’t seem to care for most of the season. The Jets made changes at head coach and offensive coordinator, but nobody really thrived last year. Garrett Wilson produced on volume alone.

But looking at the numbers, Breece Hall wasn’t all that bad, and he wasn’t drastically worse than in 2023. Efficiency-wise, yes—there’s room to improve. When you see rookies like Isaiah Davis putting up a 90 in yards after contact and 71 in tackles avoided per attempt, it makes you wonder if Hall needs a kick to get going again.

That’s exactly what he’s going to get. Now he’s entering a system with a head coach who saw firsthand in Detroit (under Aaron Glenn) what it looks like to feature two dynamic backs. His new offensive coordinator, Tanner Engstrand, spent the last few years in Detroit learning under Ben Johnson and others like Johnny Morton (now Detroit’s OC).

This offense is going to be just fine. Breece Hall is going to be better this year, even if it’s not a dramatic leap. As long as we don’t overdraft him—and bake in the fact that the offense might still have some ups and downs—Hall could end up being a solid investment.

Now, if his dynamic scores were terrible—say in the 50s or 40s—then we’d be talking about a major red flag. That would suggest a dramatic fall-off and a difficult road back to elite form. But based on the numbers from 2023 and 2024, the drop-off really wasn’t that big. What Hall needs is a better offense and a few more touchdowns.
