Denver's most explosive running back is not going to show up here because it's newly drafted second-round pick, RJ Harvey out of UCF — who I did talk about in some videos over the offseason — was a sleeper of mine in this draft. So, we couldn't have been more excited about the landing spot.
But then Denver brought in J.K. Dobbins, who for whatever reason, miraculously had a great season last year — even after all of the injuries this guy has suffered. So J.K. Dobbins clearly still has something left in the tank. Does he have enough to be a problem for RJ Harvey, though?
When you spend a second-round pick on a running back, you're more than likely going to be using them. But how much will you be using them is the question — because J.K. Dobbins wasn't even signed until way after the draft. He was kind of a surprise signing that feels like it might be more of a veteran type of leadership role — to come in and be some depth behind RJ Harvey or at least give him like a 60/40 split, with Harvey being the number one back.
But even with that being said, the numbers for J.K. Dobbins aren't all that bad last season. Are they what they used to be when he was first drafted? No, they're not. And the majority of his score comes from the volume. But tackles avoided per attempt being at 67 — very close to jumping up into that yellow range — which is a very good score when it comes to the efficiency rankings.
So, right now, when we take a look at Denver, you've got to bet on RJ Harvey having a seriously large role this season. The question becomes J.K. Dobbins — and what does his role end up evolving into?
Audric Estimé, for me — I am out. I've been out on him since even before last year's draft. Jaleel McLaughlin — tackles avoided per attempt: 88. Really good score there, but not a guy that is going to be the main ball carrier. So, wouldn't be shocked to see him maybe utilized in the passing game a little bit — some two-minute drills, third downs, things of that nature.
RJ Harvey should end up being the guy. But if J.K. Dobbins comes out and improves on the scores that we see here, it's going to cause more and more of an issue for RJ Harvey the rest of the season.
