RB: Jahmyr Gibbs - DET

Updated: Jul 3, 2024

From the moment Jahmyr Gibbs was drafted, everybody in the world was saying, "What are the Lions doing?" It didn't get any better as the season started because, at the beginning of the season, Jahmyr Gibbs wasn't being utilized much at all. Over the first four games of the season, Jahmyr Gibbs was RB36, RB23, RB24, and RB29. Then he ended up getting banged up and missed the next two weeks. Once again, the questions of why the Lions drafted another running back continued to pop up.

But then everything changed. Jahmyr Gibbs became one of the most electric running backs in all of football because the Detroit Lions put the ball in his hands. Over the course of the rest of the season, Jahmyr Gibbs became a league winner. From Week 7 through Week 18, Jahmyr Gibbs was a top-three running back five different times. He also added a seventh-place finish on the week, just for good measure. Six RB1 performances to finish out the year.

Now, heading into 2024, we can only figure that the Detroit Lions will be utilizing Jahmyr Gibbs a little differently to start this year than they did last year. The ceiling for Jahmyr Gibbs is going to be outstanding. If there's anybody out there thinking about selecting him as their RB1, he absolutely will have that upside. Keep in mind, though, that his floor could end up being a little bit lower than we would like. There are going to be some weeks where Jahmyr Gibbs just doesn't get the amount of touches that we would want him to have. David Montgomery will continue to be the main guy on the ground. Jahmyr Gibbs is going to get his fair share of carries, but his work in the passing game is where he would out-touch David Montgomery. However, at the goal line, David Montgomery will still end up being the guy.

So, when you take a look at these two running backs, we've got a wide range of outcomes here. When you look at Jahmyr Gibbs, high-end RB1 is absolutely his ceiling, but low-end RB2, even high-end RB3, could end up being his floor. For David Montgomery, high-end RB2 might be his ceiling, and low-end RB2 would be his floor.

Jahmyr Gibbs is going to be a guy where you're going to have some really great games, and there are going to be a few games that leave a little bit to be desired. But the Lions have one of the best offenses in football, and Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the better running backs in all of football, as he proved last season. I'm excited to see what he has. He's got major RB1 potential, and he absolutely could lead your team to a fantasy championship.
