If you've watched me over the last couple of years, you know that I mention catchable targets quite a bit. And when we're talking about Terry McLaurin, he may have had it worse than anyone else last year. In 2023, he had 132 targets, only 79 catches for 1,250 yards and four touchdowns. I don't know about you, but 132 targets to only 79 receptions is horrible. And it's not like he's dropping the ball all over the place; he only had one drop all season. He only had 85 catchable targets last year. That's good enough for 65.4% and would have ranked him as the wide receiver 76 overall just last year in that metric. He was a deep-ball decoy for most of the season. The offense in Washington was so vanilla and so boring each and every week you really knew that Terry McLaurin wasn't going to do a whole lot.
But now we move forward to 2024, and things are looking up. We have a new quarterback, Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels out of LSU, and we know if he does anything really good, it's throw the ball deep down the field. But we also have a new coaching staff—head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. Now overall, that is a huge upgrade to the potential play calling. The Air Raid Offense that Kliff Kingsbury runs has been known to pad fantasy stats.
Now, is Jayden Daniels or this coaching staff going to make them a Super Bowl contender? Probably not, but fantasy-wise, this is a huge upgrade. Plus, we also know that Curtis Samuel is gone; he's in Buffalo. The availability of targets is going to be there. There is a big-time draft day discount right now on Terry McLaurin, and with all the changes we see heading into 2024, we could be looking for a Terry McLaurin bounce back this season.
