Mike Evans has to be one of the best calls I had of 2023. If you watched all last offseason, I talked about the potential of not giving up on Mike Evans just yet. Then he went out and had a better year with Baker Mayfield than he did the prior year with Tom Brady.
But when you think about Mike Evans, what do you think of? You think thousand-yard seasons—he's had 10 straight. You think touchdowns—well, he's had 12-plus touchdowns in three of the last four seasons he's played. You think about big plays—for his career, he's averaging over 15 yards per reception.
Now when you look at 2024, there isn't much change in Tampa Bay. If anything, the biggest change may be at the offensive coordinator level. Dave Canales is now gone; he's the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. But everything is pointed in the right direction for new offensive coordinator Liam Coen to basically pick up where he left off. Coen is not some newbie offensive coordinator either; he's been an offensive coordinator under Sean McVay in the past.
We know they brought back Mike in free agency. We know they gave Baker a fat stack of cash. We know already that Baker likes to go down the field to Mike Evans. The biggest difference this year is the price at which you have to draft him. Last year he was a mid-round pick. This year, you're probably going to have to take him right around the third round. But honestly, I still don't hate it.
