I really want to think that Amari Cooper is a value pick this year, but I just do not trust Deshaun Watson. Cooper himself is not the problem. He's had at least a thousand yards receiving in seven of his nine years in the league. He's had 125-plus targets now in back-to-back years in Cleveland. He's one of the best overall route runners in the NFL.
But he is not the only option in Cleveland. They still have Elijah Moore, they brought in Jerry Jeudy, we have second-year wide receiver Cedric Tillman, and stud tight end David Njoku as well. So, like I said, it's really going to come down to Deshaun Watson, and I just don't know if we want to trust this guy again. He hasn't shown anything elite since he returned in 2022. He missed 11 games last year, he's only thrown for over 250 yards passing two times since his return, and now he's coming off a year in which he suffered multiple injuries to his throwing shoulder.
But there is one silver lining, I guess, kind of. As much as I would like to sit here and say, "But yeah, even if he does go down, we still got King Flacco," it's not the case, right? Joe Flacco is no longer in Cleveland, so the backup quarterback is now Jameis Winston. Now, when Jameis Winston has an opportunity to play, he typically locks on to his number one wide receiver.
Amari Cooper is not a bad pick, honestly. There are just too many things that I see in this Cleveland offense that make me worry about the selection and having to be reliant on Amari Cooper. Given the fact that guys like Zay Flowers, George Pickens, Tee Higgins, and Christian Kirk are all going to be drafted after him, I feel like I'm going to be passing on Amari Cooper more times than not in 2024.
