I'm going to take a moment and read you Jake Ferguson's targets per game last season because Dallas at the beginning of the year, I'm not really sure what in the world they were smoking. Starting in week one: seven targets, excellent, great start, then down to four, seven, and seven over the next two games. Then down to three, then down to one, back up to four, 10, seven, five, then three. Then things got serious: 8, 8, 8, 8, 6, and 6 from week 13 through week 18. He finally started seeing six or more targets per game, and during that span of weeks, he was the tight end six. But for the weeks prior, he was tight end nine, averaging only 7.8 fantasy points per game. During that stretch in the back half of the season, he was averaging 9.3 fantasy points per game.
The Dallas Cowboys do not have a choice. They need to utilize Jake Ferguson the way they utilized him towards the end of the season but for all of 2024. You really don't have a secondary option next to CeeDee Lamb as good as Jake Ferguson. He needs to become a focal point in this offense, and if he does, he's got top five potential written all over him for tight ends this year. If he can average seven targets per game for the entire season, he's going to end up with 119 targets on the year, which last season would have been fourth among tight ends, one target ahead of Sam LaPorta.
Jake Ferguson definitely has an opportunity to be the big breakout tight end candidate of 2024, and his ADP right now really isn't that awful because as of this recording in early July, he's being drafted as the tight end 8, 85th overall, over on Underdog. I look at Jake Ferguson as actually being a better redraft tight end this year anyway, so there is a chance that in redraft leagues you could see his ADP climb a little bit higher, and maybe he gets closer to being like the tight end six off the board. But if you're looking for a little bit of value on draft day and you want a guy that can be among the league leaders in targets for tight ends this season, Jake Ferguson would be your best investment.
