Three years ago, Cole Kmet had his breakout campaign with 60 receptions on 92 targets and 612 receiving yards, but he only finished as the tight end 22 because he didn't score any touchdowns. Now, the season after that in 2022, the receptions, the targets, and the yards greatly dropped, but he scored seven touchdowns, so he ended up finishing as the tight end seven. And then in 2023, a lot of the volume came back, marking his best statistical season so far. He finished as the tight end seven once again but definitely saw a rise in everything across the board.
But this is what we're going to find out about Cole Kmet in 2024: is he truly one of the elite tight end options in all of football, or was it just because his boy Justin Fields looked his way more than anybody else? I find it highly doubtful that Cole Kmet is going to see anywhere near the 90 targets that he had last season in 2024 unless there are some serious injuries.
You've got DJ Moore, who he competed with last year, but you've added Keenan Allen via trade and you drafted Rome Odunze. You've also got D’Andre Swift in the backfield now, who could end up seeing a few more targets than what you gave to guys like D'Onta Foreman, Khalil Herbert, and Roschon Johnson last season. The Chicago Bears this year are going to have plenty of weapons for Caleb Williams, and while that's great for the Chicago Bears as a whole, it can make things really, really difficult for Cole Kmet.
Realistically, I look at him more as a best ball option. I don't think he's an overall top 12 tight end this season, but given the fact there are going to be so many weapons around him, I think every once in a while you're going to see him left open, you're going to see some big games, and he's going to end up finding the end zone.
