And let me start off on this one by saying Bryce Young is not the problem. The kid does not suck. Last year, he was just running for his life, trying not to get sacked on every single drop back. But now Carolina has improved the offensive line, at least at the overall guard position, right? They brought in both Damien Lewis and Robert Hunt this offseason to try to help out Bryce Young, and this should definitely help out Bryce Young. He's going to have more time in the pocket.
But we also have a new coaching staff in Carolina as well. New head coach Dave Canales, from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we saw him work some magic last year with Baker Mayfield. He's probably the perfect head coach for a young, developing quarterback like Bryce Young. But I say all that because those are the things that we need to have go right if we're even going to consider guys like Xavier Legette.
And I'm sorry, but a new coaching staff on a team that has so many needs, a team that's already brought in Diontae Johnson this offseason, isn't going to spend a first-round draft pick on a wide receiver unless they plan on using him. And honestly, I really look at Xavier Legette as a wide receiver on this roster that possesses something that no other wide receiver does in Carolina. He has that game-breaking big play ability.
Now sure, Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen are going to be a little bit safer in this offense. They may see more volume, but they're also good enough to command some defensive attention away from the likes of Xavier Legette. He's a big-bodied wide receiver with 4.3 speed on a team that is going to be desperate for big plays. The dude is basically free on draft day.
This one is another one of those lottery ticket-type plays. If you draft him and it works out, you're going to be a genius. If you draft him and he doesn't really do anything the first few weeks of the season, you can literally drop him for a guy who's overperforming on waivers. Now, I'm not one to have a ton of lottery tickets on my bench—maybe I want one, maybe two—but if you haven't taken any chances late in the draft, Xavier Legette of the Carolina Panthers is an option.
