Last season was the emotional roller coaster of Gus Edwards' TD boom or bust. Over the course of the first six weeks of the season, Gus Edwards only found himself inside the top 24 running backs once. Then, he reeled off four RB1 performances over the next five games, scoring nine touchdowns during that span. But to close out the season, Gus Edwards gave you no RB1 performances and finished inside the top 24 only three times.
Now, things could be a little bit different in LA this year because we know Jim Harbaugh loves to run the football. They spent their fifth overall pick on an offensive lineman, they're going to try and dominate up front, they're going to run the football, and then they're going to let Justin Herbert work off of that. But they have a hodgepodge of running backs right now, and there's no guarantee that Gus Edwards is going to end up being the guy for any length of time.
A lot hinges on JK Dobbins. They drafted Kimani Vidal, who is really underrated, but if he works hard enough and shows enough, Jim Harbaugh is not going to be scared to give him the majority of the touches. So, if we're drafting any type of running back from LA this year, we really have to understand that we need to take them late and we can't rely on them to give us consistent fantasy production all year.
Gus Edwards will probably end up having the first shot, but the efficiency that we saw from him earlier in his Baltimore career just hasn't been there as of late. If he doesn't pick that back up and JK Dobbins stays healthy, JK Dobbins probably takes his job pretty quick.
