People thought that De'Von Achane and his explosiveness would fit perfectly with the Miami Dolphins, and a lot of speculation last offseason was that he would be the locked-in stone RB1 and have a big year ahead of him. But a lot of the concerns coming out of the draft were: is he going to get injured? Is he too small to take on an NFL workload? Is he going to be able to stay healthy for X amount of games?
That already became a problem because in training camp, he got hurt. He ended up missing Week 1 and had a very limited workload in Week 2. But then, in Weeks 3, 4, and 5, Devon Achane had 455 total yards, taking the NFL by storm and absolutely erupting for fantasy owners who had been waiting for him to come back. But then injury struck again. From Week 6 through Week 12, De'Von Achane only had two touches. Even though he came back in Week 13, he really didn't show that explosiveness that he had earlier in the year. From Week 13 through the end of the season, De'Von Achane only had one game where he ran for over 100 yards, and including that game, he only had two where he had 100 total yards. Down the stretch, he gave you two top-12 performances and one top-24 performance. Outside of that, he wasn't really fantasy viable.
De'Von Achane is being drafted as a top-12 running back right now. Heck, depending on the draft that you're in, people could be looking at him as a potential top-five running back, and I'm not buying into it. Some people are just banking on the fact that Raheem Mostert will either not have the impact that he did last year or he'll be injured this season, giving De'Von Achane the entire backfield. But keep in mind they drafted Jaylen Wright out of Tennessee, the number one running back on the board for a lot of people, including myself. Not only that, but Achane has a long list of injury concerns himself as well.
Now, with all three of these running backs, there are going to be some weeks where maybe you don't get the type of output that you would like. But we've seen Mostert and Achane work together before and both be RB1s. I don't see that being consistent this year. I would bank on both being RB2s more consistently and then obviously giving you some nice upside on a week-to-week basis as well. We'll see if Jaylen Wright ends up sliding himself in at any point in time, but as long as they're healthy, the one-two punch will be Mostert and Achane.
