Listen, I don't want to throw any shade at Najee Harris. His DRBR scores last year were very respectable when you take a look at the dynamic categories. In fact, these are the best dynamic scores he's had since entering the league. This past season, he wasn't just a volume-dependent running back; he showed a little bit of that giddy-up we thought we were getting when he first entered the league.
But his dynamic numbers don't excite me nearly as much as Jaylen Warren. Jaylen Warren's DRBR numbers have breakout written all over him, and if it wasn't for Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren would be locked inside my top 24 running backs, and it wouldn't even be close. The dude would be a high-end RB2 for me. The best part about Jaylen Warren is that his efficiency was so insane last year, including a sound score in tackles avoided per attempt, that even if he loses a little bit of that efficiency because he gains a little bit more volume, he's still going to have so much that his upside will just climb a little bit more and a little bit more, while his floor will stay untouched.
A majority of drafters are probably going to be looking at Najee Harris over Jaylen Warren, and even if Najee Harris gets 60% of the touches and Jaylen Warren gets 40% of the touches, Warren is so efficient that I'll take the drop in the percentage of touches just to gain a little bit of extra ADP return on investment. Like I said, if Najee Harris was not with Pittsburgh and Jaylen Warren was the only running back associated with this team, we would be looking at an Austin Eckler-like breakout from a couple of years ago or an Aaron Jones-like breakout from a few years back. That is how confident I am in Jaylen Warren being the next guy up in this Pittsburgh backfield.
But unfortunately, Najee Harris is going to take a lot of those touches. So if you're drafting Jaylen Warren, think of him as a flex player. If you do that, you won't be disappointed with whatever the outcome is. If you set your standards a little bit too high, though, Najee Harris unfortunately could bring those down to the ground.
