DRBR: Arizona Cardinals

In 2023, James Conner got off to a pretty decent start. He finished as a top 24 running back in his first three games, fell off a little bit after that, and then ended up getting injured. But what's new with James Conner?

It was his last five games of the season that fantasy owners are going to remember most, finishing as a top 12 running back in all five games and finishing as a top five running back in four of those five games. A big reason why was because of how efficient he was on the ground and in yards after contact and tackles avoided per attempt. James Conner had absolutely amazing scores last season and showed that he has some of that same burst that we used to see back when he was with Pittsburgh.

Yeah, he may have a little bit more competition for touches this season with Trey Benson now on board through the draft. If James Conner is healthy, he should see a majority of the touches, and with this offense being a little bit better this season than it was last year, his efficiency, if it remains the same, could find him in the top 12 conversation once again. More than likely, though, we're looking at some safe RB2 numbers from him, knowing that Trey Benson will absolutely get some work.

Just be really careful with James Conner because if he misses significant time and Trey Benson comes out and performs very, very well, it's not going to matter how efficient James Conner was—he could end up losing his job. Keep in mind, for James Conner last season, among running backs with 200 or more carries, he ranked third in yards per attempt, first in yards after contact per attempt, and first again in tackles avoided per attempt.
