Busts: Mark Andrews - BAL

We always say, "Don't hate players, hate ADP," and I do for Mark Andrews. But I also hate how many injuries he's acquiring basically every single season. He's only had two seasons in the first six years of his career where he's actually played a full year. Now, don't get me wrong, when he's on the field, when he's fully healthy, he's one of the best tight ends in the NFL. I'm just over the price tag on draft day. I really compare him to Deebo Samuel—Mark Andrews is the Deebo of the tight end position. He had one really big year, and we've been overpaying ever since.

Only one time in six seasons has Mark Andrews had over 855 yards receiving. Only one time in six years has he had over 75 catches in a season. Only one time has he had double-digit touchdowns. His production is just boom or bust each and every week. His receiving yards per game have now decreased in three straight seasons. He's having a hard time staying healthy; he's spending weeks on the injury report. There are games in your fantasy football season where you don't even know if you're going to have the guy until Sunday or not. But he continues to be drafted highly because the tight end position has been such a wasteland.

But is the tight end position still a wasteland? Because I really don't think it is with the addition of guys like Sam LaPorta, Dalton Kincaid, Trey McBride, and Jake Ferguson. How about the reemergence of guys like Evan Engram and David Njoku? The new rookie Brock Bowers? It's nowhere near as bad at this position as it was just a few years ago. Now, right now, Andrews is still sitting at the tight end four overall. The tight end four on average scores 162.5 fantasy points in a season. That's right around 1,000 yards, six touchdowns, and 60 receptions. Aside from what we saw from Mark Andrews in 2021, that is not an easy statline for him to hit by any means.

Especially with Likely on this roster—he is no slouch as well. Zay Flowers showed promise in his rookie season; he could take a step forward this year. They just drafted Devontez Walker; he could see an immediate role in this offense. And then what I think is arguably most important—they've added Derrick Henry to this team, and you know he's going to soak up a ton of volume in the backfield. Now, there are also people out there saying that this could be the year that Rashod Bateman finally puts it all together. That remains to be seen.

The fact of the matter is this: Mark Andrews is not the only option in town like he used to be in Baltimore. Guys like Jake Ferguson, David Njoku, Evan Engram, and Dalton Kincaid give you cheaper options than Mark Andrews, and honestly, I look at all of them as being a little bit safer with similar upside.
